At just 10 years old, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt were already imagining their musical futures.

In an interview with Consequence on Tuesday, Dec. 23, Dirnt reflected on an early conversation with Armstrong that hinted at the path they would eventually take.

“We were only 10 when I first met Billie,” Dirnt, now 53, told the outlet.

“Within minutes, one of the first things we discussed was songwriting. We were drawn to something we both thought was exciting, even as we were trying to navigate our own home lives.”

Dirnt shared that they quickly became close friends and began figuring out how to book gigs.

“The hardest part was just finding a gig that didn’t involve playing at some friend’s older brother’s party,” he explained.

In 1990, drummer Tré Cool joined the band, completing the lineup that has remained steady ever since. The band, known for hits like Boulevard of Broken Dreams, was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.

Earlier this year, Green Day also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which they described to PEOPLE as “like a fever dream.”

“I never imagined in a million years that we’d have a star like this. It’s still sinking in,” Armstrong said.

“I went and took a two-hour nap afterward because I was so overwhelmed,” Dirnt added. “It was an emotional moment in many ways, and it’s wonderful for the fans—they now have something tangible that reflects their love for Green Day.”

The ceremony featured emcee Matt Pinfield, producer Rob Cavallo, Ryan Reynolds — who delivered a speech — and Flavor Flav.

Dirnt also hinted at what’s coming for Green Day in 2026.

“We have a movie called New Year’s Rev that’s coming out, and it’s fantastic. It’s full of heart, humor, and truly touching moments,” he said.

He explained, “It tells the story of a band trying to travel across the country to open for us. Many of the adventures they go through are inspired by things that actually happened to us.”
