More than six decades after The Rolling Stones first came together, the legendary rock band is reflecting on the bond that has kept them performing together for generations.
To mark the release of their latest album, Foreign Tongues, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Ronnie Wood joined Zane Lowe on The Zane Lowe Show, where they discussed the key to maintaining one of the longest-running partnerships in music history. When Lowe asked what had allowed the group to remain together for over 60 years, each member offered a different perspective.
Wood, 79, explained that one reason the band has endured is because they don’t spend all of their time together. Instead, they live separate lives and reunite only when it’s time to create music. According to him, every reunion feels effortless, as though no time has passed, allowing them to return to the studio with the same playful energy they shared in their younger days. He said their chemistry comes from feeding off one another creatively, something he believes listeners can hear in their music.
Richards, 82, compared the band’s relationship to a marriage, acknowledging that, like any long-term partnership, it has experienced its share of highs and lows. He reflected on his decades-long connection with Jagger, also 82, saying there is something special about finding someone who shares the same musical instincts and passion. While he admitted he couldn’t fully explain why their collaboration has lasted so long, he suggested that perhaps its enduring mystery is part of what makes it so unique.
Both Richards and Wood credited Jagger as the driving force behind the band’s continued productivity. They noted that coordinating schedules has become increasingly difficult over the years, especially with everyone often living in different parts of the world. However, once they manage to gather in the studio, the creative spark quickly returns.
Wood praised Jagger’s leadership, describing him as the engine that keeps the sessions moving. He said Jagger naturally connects with every aspect of the music—from the rhythm section to the keyboards—helping bring the band’s ideas together.
Jagger, meanwhile, offered a more practical explanation for the group’s remarkable longevity. He suggested that The Rolling Stones’ continued success has played a major role in keeping the band together, noting that producing 32 albums over six decades would have been far more difficult without the enduring popularity and support they have enjoyed throughout their career.
