Mary Austin Celebrates Freddie Mercury’s Creative Legacy With Rare Lyrics and Photos in New Book A Life in Lyrics

Freddie Mercury remains one of rock music’s most unforgettable figures. As the legendary frontman of Queen, he was celebrated for his flamboyant personality, extraordinary stage presence and fearless approach to creativity.
Fans knew Mercury through the music he created, but those closest to him witnessed the ideas and experiences that shaped those songs firsthand.
Mary Austin, Mercury’s longtime friend and former fiancée, offers an intimate glimpse into that creative process in A Life in Lyrics: The Official Creative Legacy of Freddie Mercury. Released Sept. 1, the book explores personal stories, photographs and memories connected to the music that helped establish Mercury as one of rock’s defining artists.
Among the material featured in the book is a handwritten draft of “The Murder of the Black Queen.” Mercury wrote the lyrics in a notebook sometime between the summer of 1969 and spring 1970, a period when his songwriting increasingly incorporated fantasy and religious themes.
Austin also reflects on Mercury’s transition into the persona that millions of fans would eventually know. She believes he began identifying as “Freddie Mercury” around late 1971, although she could not recall the precise moment he adopted the name.
According to Austin, Mercury had a longstanding fascination with astrology and frequently discussed the planet Mercury because of its association with his zodiac sign, Virgo.
She also felt the name suited his personality. The word “mercurial” captured the different sides of his character, while adopting a new name represented a significant transition from the young man he had once been into the person he was becoming.
Austin recalled that Mercury never completely abandoned his connection to his birth name, Bulsara. Instead, the two identities existed alongside one another as he developed the powerful public persona associated with Mercury.
Away from music and the spotlight, Austin also remembered the happiness Mercury found through his pets. One particularly memorable addition to their household was a female cat named Tom, who quickly became an important part of their shared home life.
Tom joined another black cat named Jerry, and Austin remembers the period when Tom arrived as a particularly joyful time for them.
