Liam Gallagher, frontman of the iconic band Oasis, has issued a public apology after receiving backlash for using a racial slur in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, July 1. The term, which targeted individuals of East Asian descent, sparked widespread criticism from fans and media outlets, including Daily Mail, NME, and The Independent.
Shortly after the post went live, users began calling out the 52-year-old musician. One fan commented, “Liam [you’re] gonna get canceled today,” prompting Gallagher to respond with a dismissive “Whatever.” Another urged, “Liam you can’t say that,” to which he replied, “Why.” When a user explained, “Cuz it’s racist,” the singer responded, “Behave.” Another fan warned, “You’re going to offend your own fans,” and Gallagher replied, “Chill out Birdy.”
Later that day, Gallagher shared a follow-up message in an attempt to address the controversy. “Sorry if I offended anyone with my tweet before — it wasn’t intentional,” he wrote. “You know I love you all and I do not discriminate. Peace and love. LG x.”
Despite the apology, some fans — particularly across Asia — have voiced disappointment and are now calling for a boycott of Oasis’s scheduled tour stops in the region, according to Hong Kong News.
Representatives for Gallagher have not yet responded to media requests for comment.
Liam and his brother Noel are preparing for their much-anticipated Oasis reunion tour, which begins on Friday, July 4, at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium in the U.K. This marks the band’s first tour since their split in 2009 and includes dates across Europe, North and South America, Asia, and Oceania, running through November.
