Green Day Rock Coachella with Powerhouse Set — Billie Joe Armstrong Makes Surprise Appearance with the Go-Go’s

Over the past few months, Green Day has delivered a series of thrilling performances in support of their 2024 album Saviors, but their Coachella set on April 12 may have topped them all. The band leaned heavily into their biggest hits during a high-energy show that had the crowd buzzing. Just a day earlier, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong also made a surprise appearance with the Go-Go’s, joining them for one of their signature tracks.
The legendary pop-punk trio played a 90-minute set at the Empire Polo Fields in Indio, California, where the three-day Coachella festival is currently underway.
According to setlist.fm, they kicked off with “American Idiot,” the title track from their iconic 2004 album, and kept the momentum going with fan favorites like “Holiday,” “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “St. Jimmy,” and “Jesus of Suburbia.” They also dove into classics including “Basket Case,” “When I Come Around,” “Brain Stew,” “Know Your Enemy,” and wrapped things up with “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life).”
As noted by People, this marked Green Day’s Coachella debut. They incorporated tracks from Saviors as well, including the LGBTQIA+ anthem “Bobby Sox” and “One Eyed Bastard.” Tracks from 1994’s Dookie—“Longview” and “Welcome to Paradise”—and 1997’s Nimrod with “Hitchin’ a Ride” also made the setlist.
The L.A. Times reported a memorable moment when the band invited a fan on stage to help perform the final song. The fan, decked out in a black tank top, leather pants, and a flashy belt, confidently took over guitar duties as Armstrong quipped, “Oh, he’s handsome.” With the crowd cheering, the fan played along as Armstrong delivered the vocals.
Armstrong later joked, “Quit being so professional,” as the band kept the audience fully engaged with interactive moments and slick visuals throughout the set.
As noted by Consequence, Armstrong updated some lyrics to reflect current issues. During “American Idiot,” he swapped in, “I’m not a part of a MAGA agenda”—a line that’s previously drawn backlash from Elon Musk. In “Jesus of Suburbia,” he added a pointed reference: “Running away from pain like the kids from Palestine.”
One unexpected incident occurred during the explosive finale: fireworks went off during “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” and reportedly set a palm tree ablaze in the artist area. The Express Tribune reported that emergency crews acted quickly, though it’s still unclear if anyone was injured. One attendee posted a video on X, describing the frightening moment and calling it “insane,” adding that they temporarily lost hearing in one ear due to the blast.
