Gerard Way Hints at a New My Chemical Romance Album, More Than 15 Years After Their Last LP

During My Chemical Romance’s Sept. 12 concert in San Antonio, Way told the crowd that the band has consistently hoped to record another album, adding that they’re hopeful circumstances will eventually make it possible.
During the band’s Sept. 12 concert at San Antonio’s Alamodome, frontman Gerard Way opened up about the possibility of MCR returning to the studio to record new material. Fan-recorded footage from the show, as well as a report from Entertainment Weekly, captured Way discussing the band’s hopes for another album.
My Chemical Romance — featuring Gerard Way, Ray Toro, Frank Iero and Mikey Way — had previously considered making more music after releasing “Foundations of Decay” in May 2022.
However, the group’s plans were affected by the death of longtime friend and collaborator Doug McKean two months later. Way explained that the loss changed the circumstances for the band and interrupted the momentum they had built around creating new material.
“You’re like, ‘F—! I’m so excited. We should probably make more songs. ‘Decay’ was really awesome, let’s keep doing it!’” Way recalled.
He went on to explain that although life ultimately got in the way, the desire to create another record has remained.
“And then stuff happens — life happens — but just know that we’ve kinda always really wanted to make another record, so we hope that life allows us to do that,” he told the audience.
Way then turned his attention to the fans, crediting them with helping the band endure throughout the years.
“You guys, honestly, you guys kept us alive so long. You guys deserve another record, and we’d love to do that,” he said. “I don’t know when it’ll be, but it’ll be awesome.”
If it comes to fruition, the prospective fifth studio album would mark My Chemical Romance’s first full-length record in more than 15 years. It would also be their first album since the band reunited in 2019.
The comments arrive while MCR is on the road for its Long Live the Black Parade tour. The trek celebrates the 20th anniversary of The Black Parade, the band’s influential 2006 album.
The North American portion of the tour is scheduled to wrap up with three performances at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl on Oct. 21, 23 and 24.
Following the U.S. dates, My Chemical Romance will continue internationally with performances in South Korea, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. The tour is currently scheduled to conclude on Nov. 22.
