Dave Grohl says he was unaware his daughter Violet had signed a record deal, praising her independence

Violet Grohl is carving out her own path in the music world.
During an interview on The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X on Monday, Feb. 23, Dave Grohl spoke about his daughter’s musical journey, emphasizing that he had no role in it.
“My daughter Violet, she’s 19, almost 20, made this album with producer Justin Raisen entirely on her own,” the 57-year-old Foo Fighters frontman explained. “She met him, went to the studio every day, and sent me songs once they were finished. I had absolutely nothing to do with the record.”
Although he would have loved to be more involved, Dave admitted he only learned about her progress over dinner when Violet told him she had signed a record deal.
“I had no idea,” he recalled. “I knew she was looking into a deal, and she came over for dinner and said, ‘Dad, I signed my record deal today.’ I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ I try to be the dad who knows everything, but she’s just doing her own thing—and it’s amazing.”
Dave praised Violet’s talent and said her work even inspired his own upcoming album. “The energy and approach of her record really motivated me. I’ve just been inspired by her debut album. It’s so cool,” he said.
In December, Violet released her first two solo singles, THUM and Applefish. She shared an Instagram post expressing excitement about finally sharing the music she’d been working on for a year, thanking the musicians she collaborated with.
Since then, she has released What’s Heaven Without You, a song written in memory of the late actor and filmmaker David Lynch.
Though these are her first solo releases, Dave revealed in 2007 that Violet had a passion for music from a very young age. “She loved Amy Winehouse’s Rehab—even at one year old, she’d respond to the lyrics. It’s a little weird but really cute,” he said.
In January 2025, Violet joined her father onstage for Nirvana’s reunion at the FireAid Benefit Concert for California Fire Relief, singing the closing track, All Apologies.
Meanwhile, Dave is currently preparing for his own upcoming projects.
