Jack White criticized U.S. President Donald Trump for his “vile” response to the killing of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
Tributes have poured in for filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, actress and photographer Michele Reiner, who were tragically killed in Los Angeles on Sunday.
Harry Shearer, who played bassist Derek Smalls in the Spinal Tap films, shared his memories on Instagram. “Rob was a lifelong friend and collaborator. He was funny, intelligent, and a true mensch. His laughter during my comedy acts and musical projects was loud and infectious,” Shearer wrote. “He was instrumental in organizing our ideas into the films we made, writing them on 3×5 cards and shaping them into movies. Michele was also a dear friend to my wife, Judith. This loss is unimaginable — like something out of Greek tragedy.”
Jamie Lee Curtis, married to Spinal Tap actor Christopher Guest, expressed the couple’s heartbreak in a statement. “Christopher and I are numb, shocked, and devastated by the violent deaths of our dear friends Rob and Michele,” she said. “Right now, our focus is solely on their children and families, offering all support we can. Later, there will be time to reflect on their immense contributions to film, social causes, and advocacy, including early childhood development and the fight for gay marriage. We have lost extraordinary friends and need time to grieve.”
Paul McCartney, who appeared in Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, posted a photo of himself with Reiner on set. “The deaths of Rob and Michele are such a heartbreaking tragedy,” McCartney wrote. “It is especially shocking for me because I had the privilege of working with him over the past year. He was an upbeat, lovable person. Rob carried on his father Carl Reiner’s legacy of humor and created remarkable films. I will always treasure my memories of him and am devastated that he and his wife are no longer with us.”
Musician Jack White also criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump for a post on Truth Social in which Trump insulted Reiner, claiming he suffered from “Trump Derangement Syndrome” and “obvious paranoia.” White responded, “Trump, you vile, egomaniacal child. No one can defend this disgraceful attack on a brilliant artist who gave so much to the world. Using someone’s death to promote your own vanity and authoritarian agenda is a corrupt and narcissistic act. Shame on you, Trump, and anyone who defends this. God bless Rob Reiner — even though I never met him, I stand with him.”
Rob and Michele Reiner’s son, Nick Reiner, 32, has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his parents and is currently in custody in Los Angeles.
