Paul McCartney has made eight appearances on Saturday Night Live but has never hosted an episode of the comedy sketch series.
Paul McCartney returned to Studio 8H for the SNL 50: The Anniversary Special on Sunday, February 16. Just days before, the Beatles legend had performed a surprise show at the Bowery Ballroom in lower Manhattan.
During the star-studded special, McCartney performed songs exclusively from Abbey Road, starting with a dreamy rendition of Golden Slumbers, then transitioning to the heartfelt ballad Carry That Weight.
The crowd stood and clapped as McCartney closed his set with The End, bringing the audience to their feet with the iconic final track from the album, which McCartney composed. “And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make,” McCartney crooned, delivering a fitting and emotional conclusion to the celebration.
Paul McCartney has graced the Saturday Night Live stage eight times throughout the years. While he has never hosted, the Beatles icon appeared as a musical guest in 1980, 1993, 2010, and 2012. He also made cameos in 2006, 2013, and 2015, and was part of the show’s 40th anniversary special a decade ago.
Over the years, McCartney has been the subject of some playful impersonations by stars like Bill Murray, Dana Carvey, and Alan Cumming, proving even the legendary rock icon isn’t immune to a cheeky take on his persona.
