The legendary rocker opened up about his exchange with the ex-Beatle in a recent radio appearance.
Ozzy Osbourne still dreams of teaming up with Paul McCartney — even though the former Beatle doesn’t seem likely to join him in the studio.
During a recent episode of his Ozzy Speaks show on SiriusXM, the 76-year-old rocker spoke candidly about his admiration for McCartney and how much he hopes to collaborate with him one day.
When co-host Billy Morrison asked Osbourne who he’d most like to work with, the Black Sabbath frontman answered instantly: “Paul McCartney.”
Still, Osbourne quickly followed up with a dose of realism, saying, “I’d be honored, but I couldn’t…”
Morrison encouraged him to stay optimistic, saying, “Why not? Put it out into the universe. You never know.”
Osbourne then shared a memory of first meeting McCartney in 2001. “He’s a genuinely nice guy,” he recalled. “I was just like, ‘Grrr.’”
This isn’t the first time Osbourne has expressed admiration for McCartney and The Beatles. In a past interview with Heat Magazine, quoted by Far Out Magazine, he recalled asking McCartney to play bass on a track he was recording.
“Meeting Paul McCartney was f—— phenomenal,” Osbourne said at the time. “We were in the studio at the same time, and I asked if he’d play bass on one of my songs. But he told me he couldn’t improve the bassline already there. I said, ‘Are you kidding? You could p— on the track and I’d make it my legacy.’”
While McCartney has collaborated with artists like Rihanna, Kanye West, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Dave Grohl, and others, a musical partnership with Osbourne has yet to materialize — despite several encounters between the two over the years and Osbourne’s ongoing hope that the opportunity might one day become a reality.
While a collaboration between Osbourne and McCartney appears unlikely, fans of the metal legend still have something major to look forward to — Black Sabbath is preparing for what’s being billed as their final performance on July 5 in Birmingham, U.K.
The special event, titled Back to the Beginning, will mark the first time in two decades that all four original members — Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward — will reunite on stage for a live performance.
