METALLICA received the distinction of “Rock Tour Of The Year” at the Pollstar Awards, during a ceremony held on Wednesday night (February 7) at Los Angeles’s Wiltern theater as part of the annual Pollstar Live! conference. Competing against nominees such as FOO FIGHTERS, BLINK-182, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, PARAMORE, and DEAD & COMPANY, METALLICA emerged victorious.

Lars Ulrich, the drummer of METALLICA, attended the event to accept the award on behalf of the band. During his acceptance speech, he reflected on the band’s humble beginnings, mentioning how they started as outsiders in Downey forty-two years ago. He expressed astonishment at the thought of receiving awards like this so many years later, considering their earlier struggles and uncertainties as young musicians.

“It’s absolutely surreal to find ourselves in the same league as icons like Bruce Springsteen and THE GRATEFUL DEAD. And then to embark on a tour like the one we’ve just completed this year, including multiple nights at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, which is literally just down the street from where we began—it’s mind-blowing. I’m incredibly grateful that we’re still here, still kicking, or at least trying to. But what’s even more mind-boggling is the enduring power of hard music, heavy music. The fact that it continues to resonate with audiences, both fans and even mainstream listeners, after three or four decades—it’s beyond cool, it’s insane. So, heartfelt thanks to all the fans and everyone in the industry for making this journey possible.”

In December, Billboard disclosed that METALLICA’s tour in 2023 raked in an impressive $125.8 million, drawing crowds of 1.2 million across 19 shows. The band notably exceeded $10 million in earnings in seven different markets spanning Europe and North America, including notable back-to-back performances in Montreal, Paris, and more.

According to Touring Data, METALLICA achieved their highest-grossing concert ever on August 6, 2023, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, during the “M72” tour. The first night attracted an audience of 80,977, with the second night surpassing it with 82,051 attendees. Combined, the sold-out shows in the New York City metropolitan area amassed $20.8 million in revenue. Subsequently, during the following weekend, METALLICA performed at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium for two shows, the initial one grossing $7.2 million from 61,465 tickets sold on August 11, 2023, as reported by Pollstar.

The “M72” tour commenced on April 27, 2023, with a two-night stand at Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam, followed by engagements in Paris, Hamburg, Gothenburg, and other cities across Europe. Additionally, the band headlined the annual Download festival at Castle Donington, England, marking a significant highlight of the European leg of their 2023 tour, which concluded on June 18.
