Jack Black and Nickelback proved to be the unexpected combo we didn’t know we needed.
During a recent interview with IMDb promoting the Anaconda reboot, the actor struggled to recall Nickelback’s “biggest hit.” As the conversation shifted to his co-star Paul Rudd, Black suddenly burst into song.
“This is how you remind me of what I really am,” the 56-year-old sang, delivering the lyrics to “How You Remind Me” in a comically earnest tone. Rudd, also 56, immediately joined in, clapping along as Black held the final note for several moments.
“He held that,” Rudd commented as Black paused beside him in silence.
“Next question,” Black quipped, admitting it took him “a while” to remember the words. “I went into a coma.”
Rudd laughed, recalling, “You were talking by yourself, looking to me for help. I was like, ‘I can’t. I’m trying to remember the Nickelback song.’ Such relief.”
“You nailed it,” Rudd added.
Black and Rudd recently wrapped a press tour for Anaconda, which hit theaters on Christmas Day. In the film, they play aspiring filmmakers who travel to the Amazon to reboot the 1997 creature feature originally starring Ice Cube, Jennifer Lopez, and Jon Voight.
Speaking to People ahead of the premiere, Rudd reflected on the experience of working with Black. “Every once in a while, you get the chance to work with a hero of yours,” he said. “It happened here, in the form of this old hunk of love.”
Black agreed, explaining why the project resonated with him. “It’s the peeps,” he said. “It’s funny because we’re playing filmmakers in the movie, so in a way, we’re playing ourselves. It felt very close to home.”
Performing “How You Remind Me” isn’t the first time Black has showcased his cover-song skills. In March 2024, he and Kyle Gass of Tenacious D performed a comedic version of Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time.” He has also put his own spin on songs by Chris Isaak, Taylor Swift, and others over the years.
