Billy Joel’s 1978 hit “Big Shot” opens with sharp, satirical lyrics that paint a vivid picture of New York’s elite nightlife.
“Well, you went uptown ridin’ in your limousine / With your fine Park Avenue clothes,” Joel sings in the first verse, setting the tone for a tale of high society pretension and fame-fueled vanity.
The following lines — “And they were all impressed with your Halston dress / And the people that you knew at Elaine’s / And the story of your latest success / You kept ’em so entertained” — evoke a scene straight out of late-’70s Manhattan, when Studio 54 and uptown hotspots reigned supreme.
The imagery was no accident. Bianca Jagger, now 80, embodied that world of glitz and celebrity excess. A regular at Studio 54 and New York’s most exclusive parties, she was often photographed in designer looks by Halston and surrounded by luminaries like Calvin Klein, Liza Minnelli, and Andy Warhol. Her jet-setting lifestyle perfectly mirrored the attitude Joel captured in “Big Shot.”
The song’s music video also nods to the swagger of its inspiration, featuring Joel with theatrical expressions and movements reminiscent of Mick Jagger’s signature stage presence.
Mick, 82, and Bianca first met in 1970 at a music industry event while the Rolling Stones were on tour. They married the following year in a star-studded ceremony in Saint-Tropez, becoming one of the decade’s most glamorous couples.
But their relationship proved tumultuous. Speaking to PEOPLE in 1977, Bianca reflected on what drew her to the legendary rocker. “I wasn’t attracted to Mick for physical reasons,” she said. “I found him shy, vulnerable, human — the opposite of everything I had ever imagined. It sounds silly, but it was like a bolt of lightning.”
The couple welcomed their daughter, Jade, soon after their wedding. Still, fame and life on the road took a toll. “In the first years of our marriage, I played the wife. I was docile and subservient … but groupies weren’t an easy thing to get used to,” Bianca admitted at the time.
