The 64-year-old vocalist revealed his decision during the season finale of The Voice in May.
After five decades in the music industry — and 20 years as the frontman of Foreigner — Kelly Hansen is ready to move into a new chapter of his life. But don’t call it retirement.
“I’m trying not to use the word ‘retirement.’ I don’t even know what that means,” Hansen, 64, told PEOPLE in an exclusive interview. “I’m not looking for new work. I’m just grateful that I’m in a position to make that decision.”
The rock vocalist first revealed his plans to leave Foreigner during the Voice season finale in May. But according to Hansen, the idea had been brewing for quite some time — dating back to the COVID-19 lockdowns.
During that period, the former Hurricane frontman, newly married and spending more time at his Los Angeles home, experienced something unfamiliar: stability.
“For the first time, I saw all four seasons pass by from my own home,” he recalled. “I realized I hadn’t had that sense of being home in decades. I started thinking, maybe I could make a different choice for myself — one that didn’t involve touring nonstop. I love what I do, but after nearly 50 years, I’ve put in my time.”
Hansen discussed his plans with his bandmates, and at one point, there were talks about bringing Foreigner’s run to an end entirely. Ultimately, the group — which first came together in 1976 — decided the music would go on. Guitarist Luis Maldonado will step up as lead singer following Hansen’s final performance on October 11 in New Jersey.
Reflecting on his decision, Hansen noted that his choice was also about shifting his mindset on work and life balance. “I think Americans have this idea that you should work until you die,” he said. “But I’ve traveled all over the world and seen how people in other cultures live. I want to enjoy my life now. I have other passions and things I want to do.”
While rumors have circulated that health issues might be behind his departure, Hansen dismissed the speculation. “I’m completely healthy,” he said, though he admitted that performing Foreigner’s demanding songs at a high standard requires significant physical energy.
At present, Mick Jones is the band’s only remaining founding member, though he no longer tours due to Parkinson’s disease. The current lineup also features Maldonado, Bruce Watson, Michael Bluestein, Chris Frazier, and Jeff Pilson.
As Hansen prepares for his final show with the “Cold as Ice” hitmakers, he’s approaching the moment with both gratitude and emotional awareness. “I don’t want to ignore the weight of this,” he said. “I want it to be a celebration — something fun and memorable. This year feels different. I’ve been taking mental snapshots because, for 20 years, I was deep in the blur of it all. Now I can finally see what’s ahead — the sun, the open field, not just the trees in front of me.”
Once his touring days are behind him, Hansen plans to slow things down and focus on simple pleasures like cooking and working on cars.
“I’m not afraid of living a smaller life,” he shared. “I’ve spent years surrounded by loud music and bright lights, always watching where I stepped. Now, I just want to live quietly, be with my friends and family, and enjoy it.”
Hansen’s final performance with Foreigner will take place October 11 at the Hard Rock Live at Etess Arena in Atlantic City.
