The “Everlong” band announced earlier this month that Smear would be taking a break from performing at shows.
Foo Fighters Include Injured Pat Smear in Los Angeles Show via Special Video
Although Pat Smear had to miss several Foo Fighters shows due to an unusual injury, the band still found a way to feature him at their Los Angeles concert.
On Wednesday, Jan. 14, the rock group kicked off their performance at the Kia Forum with a video message from the 66-year-old guitarist.
A deep voice introduced the clip: “Ladies and gentlemen, a message from Pat Smear.” The video then revealed Smear’s cast-covered foot, propped up, before panning to show him lounging on a couch.
“Happy birthday, Dave, sorry I could not be there,” Smear said, addressing frontman Dave Grohl, who turned 57 that day, before giving a virtual introduction to the band.
After the video, the Foo Fighters took the stage, and Grohl told the audience: “We’re gonna start this off right.” He added, “We’re gonna sing one for Pat Smear,” launching into their 1998 hit “My Hero” and shouting, “He’s my hero!”
Earlier, on Jan. 7, the band shared news of Smear’s injury on Instagram, describing it as a “bizarre gardening accident.” The post featured a humorous faux tabloid cover with the caption:
“BREAKING NEWS! In the classic tradition of rockstars having bizarre gardening accidents, Pat Smear has apparently rung in the new year by smashing the s— out of his left foot.”
The band added that Smear would need to miss a few shows while his foot heals and reassured fans: “We’ll miss our beloved Pat as much as you will, but we want him fully healed and back on his feet as soon as possible.”
While Smear recovers, Jason Falkner, who has performed with artists like Beck and St. Vincent, is filling in on guitar.
The Foo Fighters will next perform in Australia on Jan. 24 and will take a break before resuming their tour from May through September.
