Spinal Tap Reunites After 40 Years with Elton John for New “Stonehenge” Recording
This Is Spinal Tap is making a comeback.
Over 40 years since the cult mockumentary first introduced audiences to the fictional rock band Spinal Tap—played by Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer—the trio is returning with a brand-new film and accompanying album. Among the highlights is a fresh take on their classic song “Stonehenge,” now featuring Elton John.
Released on Thursday, July 31, the updated version of “Stonehenge” is the debut single from The End Continues, Spinal Tap’s upcoming album, which also serves as the soundtrack to their sequel film Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.
Originally featured on the band’s 1984 debut album This Is Spinal Tap, which launched alongside Rob Reiner’s film of the same name, “Stonehenge” humorously depicted a stage prop mishap: the band famously ordered an 18-foot Stonehenge replica but mistakenly received one just 18 inches tall.
The new version of “Stonehenge” arrives with an official music video. In it, Elton John, 78, makes a grand entrance, appearing from beneath the stage seated at a piano. He then takes on most of the lead vocals, bringing a fresh twist to the parody rock anthem.
“Elton John lends his voice to the reimagined ‘Stonehenge,’ singing: ‘Stonehenge! Where the demons dwell / Where the banshees live and they do live well / Stonehenge! Where a man’s a man / And the children dance to the Pipes of Pan.’”
While the original This Is Spinal Tap followed filmmaker Martin “Marty” Di Bergi (played by Rob Reiner, 78) as he documented the fictional heavy metal band—comprised of David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean, 77), Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest, 77), and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer, 81)—the sequel, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, will follow the trio as they come together for one last live performance, with Di Bergi once again capturing the moment on film.
The upcoming album will also include another collaboration with Elton John titled “Flower People” and feature contributions from Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks, and Trisha Yearwood. Both the album and film are scheduled for release on September 12.
