Chris Martin Jokes About Coldplay’s Viral Kiss Cam Moment, Says the Band Will Keep Using the Jumbotron
Coldplay fans can expect to keep seeing themselves on the big screen during concerts, despite the band’s recent viral “kiss cam” mishap.
During the Music of the Spheres World Tour stop at Craven Park in Kingston upon Hull, England, on Monday, Aug. 18, frontman Chris Martin addressed the infamous moment involving former Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and HR executive Kristin Cabot, who became the subject of headlines after their appearance on Coldplay’s kiss cam in Boston last month.
“We are so happy to be here. Many of you have written signs. So, I’ll take some time to try and read some signs. Then we’ll see what happens,” Martin told the crowd, according to HullLive and NME. After spotting a fan’s sign saying they had seen the band “three times in three months,” he quipped, “You were at that Boston gig. Well, okay, thank you for coming again after that debacle.”
Reflecting on the controversy, Martin added, “We’ve been doing [the Jumbotron] a long time, and it’s only recently that it became a… yeah. Life throws you lemons and you’ve got to make lemonade. So, we are going to keep doing it because we want to meet some of you.”
The viral moment in question occurred at Coldplay’s July show at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. When the kiss cam landed on Byron and Cabot, the pair ducked to avoid the camera. Martin then joked on stage, “Oh, look at these two! All right, c’mon, you’re okay. Oh, what? Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.” Both Byron and Cabot later resigned from Astronomer following the incident.
Coldplay’s world tour continues with another night in Hull on Aug. 19 before a run of performances at London’s Wembley Stadium.
Meanwhile, Liam Gallagher of Oasis couldn’t resist weighing in. During his July 20 concert in Manchester, he teased the situation, telling the crowd: “Do we have any lovebirds in the house? Don’t worry, we ain’t got any of that Coldplay camera s—. It doesn’t matter to us who you’re mingling with or tingling with. None of our business.”
