Certain pop artists excel at delivering impressive classic rock covers, and Chappell Roan’s rendition of Heart’s “Barracuda” is a perfect example of this talent.
During her recent stop in Council Bluffs, Iowa, as part of the Midwest Princess Tour, pop star Chappell Roan delivered a cover of the classic Heart song “Barracuda.”
The 26-year-old emerging pop star received widespread praise online for her rendition, indicating she truly hit the mark.
Roan is characterized as a pop artist whose music features “dark and unsettling” elements as its foundation.
While she isn’t the first pop artist to tackle a cherished classic rock or metal song, not all attempts have matched Roan’s success with “Barracuda.”
For instance, Maroon 5’s cover of Nine Inch Nails’ iconic song “Closer” left many fans wishing they hadn’t tried. Similarly, Lil Uzi Vert’s rendition of “Chop Suey” by System of a Down fell flat as well.
While The Cardigans’ rendition of “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath” by Black Sabbath wasn’t bad, their later cover of “Iron Man” pushed the boundaries a bit too far.
However, like Roan, pop artists can surprise us when they nail a cover. Tori Amos’ take on Slayer’s “Raining Blood” is as mesmerizing as you’d expect from someone of her remarkable talent.
Even more impressive are rock and metal bands that successfully cover pop songs. Ghost is well-known for transforming tracks by other artists, covering everyone from Depeche Mode’s “Waiting for the Night” to The Eurythmics’ “Missionary Man.” Their rendition of ABBA’s “I’m A Marionette” stands out as one of their most unexpectedly impressive covers.
