Deacon has been absent from Queen performances since 1997.
Queen has continued for decades beyond the breakup of its classic lineup, but the band still carries deep respect for those who helped shape its legacy.
In a recent conversation with Rolling Stone, guitarist Brian May, 77, reflected on the current relationship with former bassist John Deacon, 74. Deacon started stepping away from the group in 1991 after the death of Freddie Mercury, who passed at 45, and his last public appearance with Queen was in 1997.
“It’s difficult for both Roger and me, but John simply doesn’t want to take part, and we have to honor that,” May said.
“He chooses to stay apart. Still, he remains tied to the band’s future — whenever business matters arise, he’s consulted through our management or our accountant,” he added.
“Although we don’t have personal contact, which is unfortunate, we know we have his support, and that means a lot.”
In an interview with Mojo4Music last year, May explained why Deacon’s opinion is still factored into major decisions.
“John still holds the right to give a ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ We receive word that he approves of what we’re doing, but he doesn’t want the creative pressure. We respect that,” he said.
“Sadly, we can’t turn to Freddie. But after working together as a foursome for so many years, Roger and I usually have a clear sense of how both of them would respond.”
Since stepping away, Deacon has stayed almost entirely out of the public eye, never giving interviews in the 21st century and remaining silent about his role in Queen.
In some respects, May and drummer Roger Taylor feel that Mercury is more present in their daily lives than Deacon. “Roger and I often feel Freddie’s in the room with us because we can almost hear what he’d say or how he’d react, even though it’s been so many years since we lost him,” May shared.
