“Angry Axl” Makes a Comeback: Axl Rose Kicks Over Drum Kit, Throws Mic, and Storms Offstage During Argentina Show
Since Guns N’ Roses reunited in 2016, fans have come to know a very different Axl Rose — one far removed from the volatile frontman who once sparked infamous riots in St. Louis and Montreal. The new Axl had a reputation for punctuality, professionalism, and composure — an older, wiser version of the rock icon.
But over the weekend, that calmer image appeared to crack.
Fan-shot footage from the band’s recent Because What You Want & What You Get Are Two Completely Different Things tour stop at Estadio Huracán in Buenos Aires shows Rose visibly losing his temper during the opening number, “Welcome to the Jungle.” In the clip, the 62-year-old frontman charges up to drummer Isaac Carpenter’s kit and kicks the bass drum mid-song. Moments later, he hurls his microphone in the same direction before storming offstage as the track ends.
It’s unclear what triggered the outburst — whether Rose was battling technical issues or unhappy with Carpenter’s performance — but fans online quickly began speculating about the cause.
When he returned to the stage, Rose appeared to exchange a few terse words with his bandmates before turning to the crowd and remarking, “So, I’ll just try and wing this.”
Carpenter, who joined Guns N’ Roses earlier this year, previously played in Duff McKagan’s band Loaded. McKagan himself has praised the drummer, noting his ability to channel elements of the group’s two original drummers — Steven Adler and Matt Sorum — while adding his own energy.
“They’re both amazing drummers,” McKagan said earlier this year. “And Isaac somehow blends both of those guys and adds his own thing. The groove and swing of the songs right now with Isaac is super impressive and super fun.”
The flare-up comes just weeks after Sumerian Comics announced Axl Rose: Appetite for Destruction, a forthcoming graphic novel that reimagines the singer as a half-human, half-machine antihero whose journey could determine the fate of humanity — a fittingly dramatic twist for a frontman known for both his fire and his flair.
