Avril Lavigne has offered a special surprise for fans of Alanis Morissette.
On Wednesday, April 15, the Canadian pop-punk singer released her own version of Morissette’s well-known track “Ironic.” Her cover appears on the soundtrack for the upcoming indie romantic comedy Mile End Kicks, which features Barbie Ferreira as a music journalist working on a book about Morissette’s 1995 album Jagged Little Pill.
Lavigne’s interpretation highlights her distinctive raspy and emotional vocal style, giving the song a more reflective and melancholic feel compared to the original.
She also promoted the release on Instagram Stories the same day, sharing a link for fans to listen.
Lavigne and Morissette have a history of collaboration as well. In 2005, they performed “Ironic” together during a show at the House of Blues in Los Angeles, where Lavigne appeared as a surprise guest during Morissette’s encore.
Originally released in 1996 as a single from Jagged Little Pill, “Ironic” went on to become Morissette’s highest-charting song on the Billboard Hot 100. It later received two Grammy nominations in 1997, including Record of the Year and Best Short Form Music Video.
In a 2020 interview with Rolling Stone, Morissette revealed that the song nearly didn’t make it onto the album. She admitted she was initially unsure about including it, though others strongly encouraged her. Over time, she acknowledged that its melody connected with listeners more than she expected, even reflecting that she may have underestimated its impact.
